Prisons

The relatively dark image on the right of the header above may not be immediately recognizable, but is that of an old fashioned prison.  This is an example of an engineered social environment of a rather horrible variety.  At one time this design was considered modern and humane, but we now know how bad life in such an institution can be.  In fact it is not the design of the building which is the problem, but the way it is organized.

A prison could be a good social environment which would truly be a correctional institution, improving or literally correcting the people incarcerated in it.  Or it could be a place which makes people worse.  Most often it is the latter.
